A moving company can compete for several very different searches: a local apartment move, a long-distance quote, packing help or a commercial relocation. Competitor PPC intelligence helps you see which advertisers appear, what they promise and where their ads send prospective customers.

The useful question is not simply who appears first. It is whether your own campaign attracts enquiries that match your services, coverage and available capacity. More visibility is expensive when the resulting calls are for jobs you cannot accept.

This guide explains how to combine auction reports, observed ads, landing-page reviews and your own lead records. Use the findings to choose a practical test—not to copy a competitor’s offer or assume that its campaign is profitable.

Map the moving businesses you actually compete with

Start with the work you want to attract. List the services you genuinely offer and the locations or routes you can support. A company focused on local household moves may face a different competitor set from one offering office relocation or long-distance transport.

Group advertisers by their role: direct local mover, regional operator, national brand, broker, lead-generation site or an adjacent provider such as storage. Check how the business describes its offer before treating it as a like-for-like benchmark.

Record the advertiser or displayed domain, observed service, search context and destination page. Do not infer the business’s operating role solely from an ad headline. Headquarters also matter less than whether the company competes for the same customer need and coverage.

Search needExample query themeWhat to record
Local household moveLocal movers plus a city or suburbCoverage, move type and contact route
Long-distance relocationMoving company plus an origin and destinationSupported routes and quote requirements
Office or commercial moveOffice relocation in a service areaProject fit, planning information and enquiry steps
Packing or storagePacking help or storage linked to a moveWhether the advertised service fits your offer

These examples are a research framework, not a keyword list to import unchanged. Review the language used in your market, your own search terms and the jobs your team can price and deliver.

For your own website, SEO planning and local SEO can support useful service and location information alongside paid campaigns. Paid and organic visibility should still be measured separately.

Use Auction Insights within its reporting limits

For eligible Search activity, Google’s Auction Insights report supports keyword, ad-group or campaign selections and time/device segmentation. Availability depends on activity thresholds. It compares overlapping auctions, not the entire moving market.

MetricUseful interpretationAvoid assuming
Overlap rateHow often another advertiser also showed when you didIt always competed above you
Position above rateHow often it appeared higher when both ads showedHigher placement means more profitable jobs
Outranking shareHow often you ranked above it or showed when it did notYou know why its ad was absent
Top / absolute top ratesHow often impressions occupied those placementsPlacement reveals its budget or lead quality

Keep the selected scope and date range with each export. Auction Insights is not a direct location-by-location competitor report. For geographic analysis, review your own location reporting and campaign structure separately, alongside observations made with documented location context.

Review impression share and lost exposure

Search impression share compares received impressions with estimated eligible impressions. Google reports lost impression share separately for budget and Ad Rank; the budget-loss metric is campaign-level. These measures concern your account’s eligibility and delivery, not a rival’s advertising bill.

Compare periods with changes in targeting, budget, bids and service coverage annotated. A shift after your own campaign edit is not automatically evidence that a competitor expanded. Do not add impression-share figures across unlike scopes as though they form a complete market census.

The aim is to identify a question worth investigating: are you missing relevant demand, or are you already reaching people whose requests do not fit? A paid search review should connect that question with your own conversion and lead-quality evidence.

Review ads without mistaking a snapshot for a strategy

Use Google’s Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool to inspect your own ad appearance without adding search impressions to your statistics. It is preferable to repeatedly searching for your own ads. A preview still does not represent every auction or all campaign activity.

Keep a dated observation log for competitor messages and public landing pages. Record the query, location context, device, visible offer and URL. Repeat relevant checks under comparable conditions before calling something a persistent pattern.

Do not click competitors’ paid ads merely to inspect their websites. Review their public pages directly where possible. Avoid submitting false quote requests or booking appointments during research; inspect visible form fields and use your own site to test submission behavior.

What visible ads can suggest

Repeated emphasis on packing, local moves or office relocation can suggest a messaging priority. A dedicated landing page can show how the advertiser explains a service. Both observations are useful inputs for your review.

They do not reveal the exact keyword, match type, bidding strategy, audience settings or negative-keyword list. A missing ad may reflect eligibility, timing, budget, auction conditions or a different experience—not proof that the advertiser excluded the query.

Treat third-party keyword and spending figures as estimates with incomplete coverage. Record their source and period, and keep them separate from account data you can directly verify. An estimate is not a basis for claiming what another mover pays per lead.

Compare the ad promise with the landing page

Follow the logic of the customer journey: search need, advertised offer, page content and contact action. A local apartment-move ad should lead to information relevant to that service, not require visitors to work through an unrelated long-distance pitch.

Review mobile and desktop layouts. Look for useful service coverage, understandable offer conditions and a visible next step. A shorter form is not automatically better if it removes information the team needs to assess a move; evaluate the balance between ease of submission and qualification.

Journey elementReview questionPossible improvement on your site
Headline and offerDoes the promise match the move type and location?Clarify the service and coverage
Service informationCan the visitor tell what is included?Explain packing, access or assessment steps where relevant
Proof and termsAre reviews, credentials and offer conditions supported?Use accurate evidence and clear conditions
Quote formDoes it collect useful move context?Review origin, destination, move date and contact fields
Next stepIs receipt distinguishable from a booking?Explain who responds and what needs confirmation

Use only claims your operation can substantiate. If advertising discounts, included packing, short-notice work or an estimate type, make the conditions accurate and appropriate to the services you provide. A rival’s wording is not permission to make the same promise.

For your page structure and offer explanations, content strategy can help. If the layout, mobile form or contact controls need implementation work, that belongs within web design and development.

Our guide to AI for SEO and conversion rate optimization explains how to connect search intent, page improvements and measurement. It complements competitor research by focusing on the experience you control.

Turn observations into focused tests

Write each finding as a hypothesis supported by evidence. For example: the campaign attracts apartment-move enquiries, but its landing page does not explain building access or the quote process. The proposed test is a clearer page—not an automatic bid increase.

Choose one meaningful hypothesis at a time, or be explicit when comparing a complete page variation. Define the audience, primary outcome, evaluation window and relevant guardrails before launch. Keep a change log and avoid attributing every difference to your edit when other conditions also changed.

Refine targeting using your own search terms

Review the search terms and resulting requests available in your account. Queries about employment, truck rental or moving supplies may be irrelevant to a full-service mover, but their suitability depends on the actual offer. Do not apply a blanket exclusion list without checking context.

Review proposed negative keywords for unintended effects before adding them. Prioritize evidence from your own traffic and enquiry records over guesses about another advertiser’s exclusions. Keep brand and nonbrand activity distinguishable where the account structure supports it.

Review bids and budget with lead value in mind

Before raising bids to challenge a competitor’s placement, ask whether the affected searches produce suitable requests and whether the business can accept the work. Review conversion definitions and bidding settings as well as auction pressure.

Distinguish a manually controlled bid change from adjustments to an automated bidding strategy. The right action depends on the strategy, campaign goals and reliable outcomes available. Avoid chasing a top position while overlooking irrelevant requests or missed follow-up.

For routes or services you cannot support, improve targeting and page clarity before buying more traffic. For a relevant campaign constrained by budget, assess the case for additional spend using your own results and operating capacity.

Test message and conversion-path improvements

Potential tests include a service-specific headline, clearer coverage, accurate packing information or a quote form that asks for the move details your team uses. Keep receipt confirmation separate from accepting a job or guaranteeing availability.

Compare qualified enquiries and downstream progress alongside clicks. A variation producing more submissions can still be less useful if those enquiries fall outside your routes or budget range.

For platforms that support experiments, personalization or behavior analysis, see 10 AI tools for conversion rate optimization. Select a tool around the test and available traffic, rather than adding software before defining the problem.

Connect campaign data with enquiry follow-up

An ad and landing page can do their job while the office process loses the request. Check that calls and forms reach the responsible person, and record whether enquiries are suitable, quoted, booked or declined where your tools support those stages.

Define the measures before reporting improvement:

  • Contact action: a phone-link click or form interaction; not proof of a conversation.
  • Submitted enquiry: a captured request, with duplicate and spam handling defined.
  • Qualified enquiry: a request meeting your stated service, route and other relevant criteria.
  • Booked move: work accepted and confirmed through your business’s actual process.

Calculate cost per qualified enquiry using campaign cost and the qualified-enquiry count for the same defined cohort and period. Allow for conversion lag and tracking gaps. Booked work and revenue need their own reconciliation; they should not be inferred from a form submission.

Where the project needs connected records, funnels and CRM integration can be assessed alongside digital architecture. Automation workflows may support agreed alerts or tasks, subject to the tools and process involved.

Review the market without chasing every fluctuation

Keep a manageable competitor set and a consistent review method. Record new advertisers, changed offers, route messaging and landing-page updates separately. Annotate your own releases and campaign adjustments in the same period.

Refresh the research when it can change a decision: a new service launch, an expansion in coverage, persistent deterioration in qualified enquiries or a meaningful shift in the account’s auction pattern. A recurring review should produce an action or a documented decision to keep the current approach.

AI can help organize observations, group message themes or draft a comparison brief. It should not invent competitor budgets, fill gaps with assumed settings or treat its confidence as verification. Check important observations against the original report or page.

For planning how data can support content and promotion decisions, read the AI predictive content marketing guide. Its baseline and evaluation principles are useful here, but it is not a tool for discovering another advertiser’s private campaign settings.

Choose a practical implementation scope

If your priority is campaign targeting, conversion definitions or landing-page alignment, start with paid search support. Describe the services, routes, campaign history and outcome you need to improve before choosing the scope.

The Lead Response System explains enquiry capture, acknowledgements, routing and team follow-up. The Lead Response Package is a defined starting point for supported form, CRM and response connections. It is separate from advertising spend or PPC management.

For crawl or indexing issues affecting the wider website, explore technical SEO and the Technical SEO Cleanup Package. Those address technical search foundations; they do not replace a paid campaign review.

Agencies needing implementation alongside their own client relationship can use Agency Partners to discuss website, technical search or integration delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Is competitor PPC analysis useful for a small moving company?

Yes, when it supports a real decision about services, coverage, messaging or landing pages. Start with a manageable set of observations and your own lead-quality evidence. Limited account activity may restrict auction reporting, but it does not prevent reviewing the customer journey you control.

Can I see a competitor’s exact Google Ads budget or keywords?

Not from a visible ad or Auction Insights. Third-party tools may estimate activity, but they do not disclose the competitor’s complete account. Keep observed facts, estimates and hypotheses clearly separated.

Can I break Auction Insights down by city?

Do not assume it provides a city-level competitor breakdown. Search Auction Insights supports time/device segmentation within eligible selections. Review geography through your own location data and suitable campaign structure, supported by documented ad observations.

How much does a competitor review cost?

It depends on the services, locations, account access and implementation involved. Platform reports and public-page research can support a small review; paid tools and external delivery add costs. Agree the questions, deliverables and any ongoing monitoring before commissioning the work.

What should I do if there is too little competitor data?

Focus on your own search terms, service fit, form delivery and enquiry outcomes. Keep public observations dated and limited in their interpretation. Avoid adding complexity or increasing spend solely to imitate an advertiser whose results you cannot see.

How do I know whether a change helped?

Compare a defined outcome with an appropriate baseline or controlled test where practical. Review qualified enquiries and booked work, not just click-through rate. Allow for seasonality, campaign edits, operating capacity and tracking gaps before attributing the difference to the change.
